Evaluation, Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Before our lessons I don’t think I would have been able to answer this question correctly as I didn’t really understand the concept of what a media institution or distributor was. But working from September to now I have a complete understanding to what exactly it is. The production company is the necessity and backbone to any film, the production company might be responsible for the funding of your movie or they may be the starting point of introducing you to larger companies that could fund your film. Our movie ‘Vengeance’ has been made by our made up company ‘Minimalist Productions’. If we wanted our movie to be distributed we would have to get a well-known company that fits well with the genre of our film. Keeping this in mind we couldn’t bring our movie to a company such as Walt Disney as this company is usually aimed at a younger audience such as children, so doing some research I looked into the distributing topic online to see what company suited our film.

Looking on Wikipedia I found a whole list of different film distributors around the world. If I wanted to go to a smaller distribution company I could approach a company such as StudioCanalUk this company is English and have distributed films such as ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’, ‘Tyrannosaur’,’ Don't Be Afraid of the Dark’ and ‘The Awakening’ all these films especially the awakening are somewhat similar to the genre of my movie.  Then again if I wanted to be really bold and outgoing about it I could approach much bigger companies such as Universal Studios who distributed classic horror movies such as ‘Dracula’, ‘Frankenstien’, ‘The Mummy’ , ‘Jaws’ , ‘The Thing’ and ‘Hannibal’ just to name a few.
Films similar to mine that are distributed by another company is:

Evaluation, Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I think my media product represents the group of people who love films of a horror and thriller genre.  The plot of the film is that of a girl who is bullied at school and then is accidently killed by the people that bully her. The girl’s ghost then returns to the hallways and classrooms of her school where she was killed, the plot of the story would relate well with a wide range of audiences. The target audience could range from teenagers to young adults, teenagers could relate to the character with the whole bullying aspect of it as many teenagers deal with the same thing so I think this a good representation of that.  This is definitely a good addition to our product as there will be a whole range of different teenagers coming to see the film because it deals with a serious issue as well as having the whole horror theme to go with it I think we used a good combination of represantion and theme to draw in a particular audience.

Here is screenshot of the main character slowly walking through the corridors of her old school.

Evaluation , Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In our media project I wanted to make sure that our opening sequence looked as professional as possible. We had to make sure that we utilised conventions that real media products use, but we also wanted make the conventions into our own.
Firstly, I could not let the sequence start off straight away there had to be a build-up of some sort to make it look more interesting and professional to the audience.  I  also I wanted to make it look more convincing that this was indeed a professional attempt into making an interesting media product. So keeping that in mind I wasn’t just making sure that the audience were interested I had to make sure that even I as an audience member was convinced by it.

When picking a company logo to use it was quite a difficult decision because I did not know whether or not I should use a well-known company such as Universal, DreamWorks etc. In the end I decided to  use the college's name as the production company behind the film.  It may not be as well known as the other companies mentioned earlier, but this company idea is original like my product.
On the top right hand corner there is an example of a credit for the beginning of the film 'Kidulthood.  The editors of the film have used a plain black background then white writing in plain text. On the right hand side is the footage I have used, it is a similar tactic with the simple lettering and background at the beginning.

During media introductions of every film there is always a series of credits being shown throughout it, with this very vital concept in mind I wanted our project to have the same theme as professional films. We had our companies name come up first then a made up production company second, then we had the names of myself and my co-partner Maryam. I am listed as the editor of the production and Maryam is listed as the director. In-between credit listings were the shots of footage we had, I think this was a good idea as it makes the clip look more interesting and mysterious and would make the audience want to watch more. When crossing over to the credits we had a white background with black writing I think this was a good effect as it was not too over the top and busy and the font was the right style which complimented the genre of the film.

My Final Project

Here is my end result of my opening sequence, though we didnt have many shots my lecturer and i made do with the shots we did have. In my opinion we did an alright job on what we did have and i am quite happy with the end result .

Treatment

For ideas for our film we decided to look on the internet and research different concepts other horror movies have had, in addition to that i got an idea to look on a crime website and look at actual serial killers and their crimes.Going on the website there was a list of the 25 most notorious serial killers ranging from 1800th century to nows 21st century , one that stood out to my partner and i was a murderer who killed his victims then put their remains in hydric acid to dispose of their bodies. This gave us the idea to have our story maybe centered around a killing or death.
